Crisp and linear in nature, this wine is a perfect depiction of time and place. These grapes are from a cooler growing region which allows a longer “hang time” (has nothing to do with basketball, this is winemaker speak for more developed flavors). While experiencing extended barrel-aging, this chardonnay remains balanced and clean with flavors of green apple, quince and a touch of vanilla.
While many turn their noses up at this underappreciated wine, it remains on the global top selling list for a reason. The lower elevations of the Rattlesnake Hills are great for crisp white wines, and this 100% Riesling is a perfect example. Reserve Rhone Blend: 62% Syrah, 25% Mourvedre, 13% Grenache. This wine is polished and supple with a beam of raspberry and pomegranate fruit teasing the senses. Intense yet harmonious, the El Jefé yields a dark succulence to the palate in the form of anise, plum and a hint of biodynamic loam. All of this juicy concentration carries nicely into the earthy, tannin-laced finish.
After the first sip I was transported to the Trattoria al Tartufo in Alba, Italy. What, this isn’t Italian Barbera??? It is stunning Washington State Barbera! Complex? Yes! Opulent? Absolutely! It is a concentrated mouthful of crushed berries, rose petals, plums and cherries. A fruit bomb, you ask? No way! The seductive and ample fruit is held in place by velvety tannins and bright bright acid. The finish is a voluptuously spicy, fruity, vanilla kiss that beckons, cajoles, even commands one to continue filling the glass.
Dark, briary, and succulent, this wine offers up rich layers of ripe plum, anise, with a hint of smoky bacon fat. All of this loveliness is enveloped in a robe of sweet vanilla oak. The tannins are just shy of strapping; bold enough to get your attention but still allowing for the fruit to take center stage. Sangiovese, or the “blood of Jove,” is probably best known for its role in the Italian wines Chianti and Brunello di Maltacino. This wine exhibits the traditional elevated acidity, medium body, and bright red fruit notes. Judicious vertical barrel-aging has added a sweet tar and smoky vanilla finish. While fabulous now, be assured this “super-tuscan” will only get better in the years to come. Pair this wine with traditional Italian cuisine involving cured meats, cheeses and red-based sauces.
This wine is rock-solid, with a dark core of blackberry jam and wild huckleberries. Cedar-tinged tannins and black tea fill in the crevices of this fruit-driven wine, gliding to a long and complex finish. This particular block consistently exhibits such a variety of deep and rich flavors. Aromas of plum, blueberry, black pepper, wood spice and delicate licorice fern welcome one to the glass. All of these promised flavors merge onto the palate, where the blueberries expand into a dark bramble of briary goodness. Mouthfuls of lacey tannins and balanced acidity envelope this fruit bowl, showing the endless layers of depth in this wine. Although still very youthful and evolving, there is an elegance present that carries on through the lengthy finish. This understated powerhouse promises to be a wine for the ages.
Block 11 is known for its depth, elegance and backbone. Ripe, flamboyant and beautifully proportioned layers of blackberries, dark chocolate, anise notes, dried herbs, cassis, and freshly charred American oak exude from the glass. While an extremely heady and aromatic wine, it stays bright and clean on the palate with the focused acidity for which Washington State Cabs are renowned. The tannins are extremely firm at this point, keeping all these flavors wrapped up in a tight little package. If you drink it now you may want to decant it to release its potential.
Using locally grown, fresh raspberries is the secret to why this wine tastes like it's jam packed with fresh fruit. Picked at the height of ripeness, this vintage has more of a sweet-tart tongue twisting flavor that will have you craving another sip.
